After learning about ‘Forces’, focusing mainly on ‘Push and Pull’, Grade 1/2 began putting their knowledge to good use in making a ‘Rube Goldberg’ machine.
‘A Rube Goldberg machine is a machine intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overcomplicated fashion. Often, these machines consist of a series of simple devices that are linked together to produce a domino effect, in which each device triggers the next one, and the original goal is achieved only after many steps.’
Students started by experimenting with levers and pulleys, ramps and different forces. They have started to plan out their machines with a partner and in the final week of term, we will be constructing machines and demonstrating how they work to their peers.
Here’s what the students think about Rube Goldberg machines:
‘’I found it fun but hard.” Denzel
‘’Super, super, super, super stressful because I was scared that I’d knock down all the dominos before it was finished.” Hayden
‘’I felt really proud when my group managed to complete our Rube Gold-berg creation without knocking any dominos down!” Sophia
We are looking forward to seeing their creations in Week 10, fingers crossed they all work!
