Message from the Principal
Can you believe there are still 8½ week to go until the end of the school year?! Personally, I’m struggling with all the Christmas promotions as I walk up and down the supermarket aisles that are already appearing….We have to many things to do before I can even start to think about being organised for Christmas.
How often do you read?
Did you know that if your child ready every day (or is read to) for just 10 minutes, they will be exposed to over 600,000 words in a year. 20 minutes a day results in more than 1,800,000 word exposure in a year! Dr Seuss wisely said “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more places you’ll go.” Reading for a variety of purposes broadens a child’s horizon and creates opportunities in the future.
We recommend that children read a home as often as possible (in an ideal world that would be every day). Sometimes it can be a fine line between providing the challenge for your child’s reading to improve and making the reading task to difficult and boring so the child loses interest. We want to ensure that you child develops their reading skills to their greatest level whilst maintaining a love of reading and literature. Some of the books your child chooses to bring home will be the books that they are able to read by themselves, so will be more suitable for you to read together, and some will be best suited for you to read to your child. All these situations are valuable reading experiences for children.
Should I stay or should I go?
Planning for the 2024 school year is in full swing! To assist us in making sure we are ready for next year, if you or anyone you know hasn’t enrolled or intends on not being a part of our school community in 2024, could you please let us know as soon as possible.
Which leads me to the next point…… later this term we will start the complex process of placing students into classes for 2024. We spend many hours undertaking this important work, which considers variables such as (but not limited to):
- Academic ability and performance
- Working habits (e.g. ability to work independently)
- Classroom behaviour
- Social network/friendships
- Social maturity and personality
- Special needs (e.g. siblings/twins/family members)
- Other factors such as anxiety.
During this process, changes and adjustments to the proposed class groups are made over several weeks. Draft class lists are then submitted to the Leadership team for final ratification and then finally teachers are assigned to class groups. For the record, teachers do not ever pick students to be in their class, all classes are assigned by the Principal Class team (i.e. Nerida and myself) once the groups are decided.
If families have any requests for placement of children on educational grounds, please send me an email (megan.dell@education.vic.gov.au) no later than Friday 10th November. It is an important goal that we place children in a happy and secure learning environment. Requests from previous years become dated in terms of relevance, so we will only consider information from the past twelve months.
Swimming
This is your little reminder that our swimming program for Foundation – Year 2 commences on Monday. Years 3 – 5 will be the following week. Remember to pack clean underwear, bathers and a towel each the program occurs. If you have any questions, make sure you touch base with your child’s classroom teacher.
COLOUR RUN
Fingers crossed the weather says like this for next Friday for our 2023 COLOUR RUN! Get sponsors and outfits ready…because it’s gong to be lots of fun (if last year is anything to go by). On personal note, I’m hoping the slime is warmer than last year!
That’s all from me this week. I look forward to seeing you around the school ground.
Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay happy and remember to be kind to yourself and others.
Megan 😊
