Message from the Leading Teacher
Hats
Spring has finally arrived! With the warmer weather, it also means the UV levels are raising. As part of our SunSmart policy, all students are required to wear hats between September and April. Hats are to be worn for all outdoor activities, including recess, lunch, sports, excursions, and camps.
Student Led Conferences
Student led conferences provide a forum to develop a student agency for students, parents and teachers to acknowledge student progress and achievement. Developing student agency is an important goal for our students and one that we highly value in their development as a learner.
Student led conference are a valuable avenue for involving families and students in the learning process and helping families understand the teaching, learning, assessment and reporting process. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the student’s achievements.
Professor Hattie, the Director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute, University of Melbourne identifies “student self-reporting as the most significant indicator linked to raised student achievement.” At Richmond Primary, we also know that it encourages students to reflect on their learning and promotes the articulation of student thinking.
Students’ teachers and families will also discuss future learning goals and next steps to improve learning. We therefore ask all students to be in attendance for this conference.
If the teacher, or parent, wishes to discuss an issue without the student being present then we ask that another appointment be made on an alternative day.
Bookings are made online through Compass Conferences from August 19th. Please ensure your time is booked by September 9, our office staff will not be able to make the booking.
Family Maths Night
This term we will be hosting a ‘Family Maths Night’ for our whole school community. Families are encouraged to attend this event with their children where they can engage in a play-based approach to building maths skills. It will take place on Tuesday September 10th between 3:45-4:45.
During this session, you will be free to rotate around several games within your child’s learning space. Each activity will be something that you’re able to easily adapt to play at home and play too.
Here are some tips for supporting your kids through math games:
- Let Kids Take the Lead! The more kids are actively involved, the more they learn. Avoid explaining how to solve a puzzle or what the right move is. Instead, offer hints if it helps keep them engaged. Revealing the answer outright can take the fun out of the game.
- Join the Fun! Show your kids that you’re enjoying the game as much as they are. They’ll be more motivated to participate and see how play and math can go hand in hand.
- Prioritize Fun! The most important lesson we can teach kids about math is that it’s enjoyable and empowering. If you or your kids aren’t having fun, it’s okay to take a break and come back later.
SO why not come and join us on RPS Family Maths Night? It will be a relaxed evening of fun maths games for all ages!

Busking for Change
Over the past few weeks, in Performing Arts, we have been practising a special song called Shordi Krik, as part of this year’s Busking for Change initiative. Busking For Change is a concept developed by ILF Ambassador Josh Pyke to engage primary school students in a musical literacy activity and fundraise for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. The activity is designed to engage students in learning a song each year, with as many instruments available to the students, and in an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander language. Busking For Change is fun and educational and helps acknowledge and promote the rich diversity of Indigenous languages and cultures while raising funds to help create more books in languages that Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander children speak at home.
Did you know that the largest language spoken only in Australia and the second most spoken language in the Northern Territory is Kriol? It is the First Language learnt by many children in remote Communities.
Next Friday (13th September), at our Whole School Assembly, we will be Busking for Change – so come along and hopefully we can earn your pocket change to raise $500 for this very worthy cause. If you are keen to support us achieving our goal, in other ways, or you’d like to share with your friends and family who can’t come and watch us perform in person, here is our fundraising page, on which you can donate: https://buskingforchange.ilf.org.au/richmond-primary-school
Antarctic Penquin Festival
In Term 1 the Foundation students created a mixed media 3D penguin in Visual Arts for the Australian Antarctic Festival in Hobart which was held over 22-25th August. To raise money for the penguins in Antarctica.
The festival had over 20,000 visitors to the event of which their penguins were an iconic feature.
