Message from the Leading Teacher
Hi RPS Community,
What a joy it has been to walk around the school and see the excitement and energy generated by our new building and landscaped spaces. From students in their white lab coats conducting experiments in STEM classes to multi-age groups playing, exploring and collaborating around the new sandpit and water pump, these new learning environments are already enriching the daily experiences of our students.
Speaking of excitement, we are delighted to share that more than $1,500 was raised on NF Day on May 15th. Thank you to everyone in our community who contributed to this fantastic result. Your support has helped raise both vital funds and greater awareness for Neurofibromatosis. We are incredibly grateful for your generosity and commitment to making a difference.
With three weeks to go of Term 2, some important events are coming up:
Monday 8th June– King’s Birthday Public Holiday (Student Free Day)
Tuesday 9th June- Staff Professional Practice Day (Student Free Day)
Friday 12th June– Pizza Day (orders close Monday 8th June)
Friday 26th June– Last Day of Term 2.00pm finish time
In other exciting news, the 2026 RPS School Production will be going ahead in Term 3. The dates are currently being finalised, and we look forward to sharing more information with you in the coming weeks.
Have a wonderful long weekend!
Hayley
Student Free Days
As previously mentioned, there will be no school on Monday and Tuesday next week due to the public holiday and the Staff Professional Practice Day.
Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) will be operating on Tuesday, however, there are only a limited number of places remaining.
Jake's Paternity Leave
Jake has always been a friendly and welcoming presence in our school office. Last year, he and his family welcomed their son and from this week Jake will be taking on the role of primary caregiver. We wish him all the very best during his paternity leave and look forward to welcoming him back in Term 4. In the meantime, Jaya, Laurence, Andrea, Pennie and Mel look forward to continuing to support our families from the front office. Please note that Jake will not be monitoring his personal email during this period. If you need assistance, please do not email Jake directly. Instead, please contact the school e-mail on richmond.ps@education.vic.gov.au.
Spotlight on Maths at RPS
At Richmond Primary School, students are curious and brave mathematicians who explain and justify their thinking. They understand that mistakes are a valuable part of the learning process and embrace the challenge of solving real-world mathematical problems.
At RPS we encourage students to use concrete materials to support their understanding of new concepts, while building fluency and deep understanding through structured and sequenced learning.
In our maths lessons, we also use the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model to support students in developing mathematical understanding. This includes:
- “I do” – the teacher explicitly models and explains new concepts.
- “We do” – students work collaboratively with teacher guidance to apply their understanding. They receive regular feedback, with support gradually reduced as confidence grows.
- “You do” – students independently practise and apply their skills, solve problems, and make connections to real-world contexts
This approach ensures students are supported as they build confidence and move towards independence in their mathematical thinking, while also enabling teachers to identify students who may require further support or extension.
Staff have been working closely with Maths consultant Ryan Dunn to enhance and strengthen our mathematics teaching practices. We look forward to continuing this professional learning journey, deepening our knowledge, and providing the best possible support for our students in Mathematics.
Year 1/2 Excursion to Scienceworks
On Wednesday this week, the Year 1/2 students went on an excursion to Scienceworks as part of their Term 2 Inquiry Unit on weather. The students had a fantastic day exploring the interactive exhibitions and watching an engaging weather-themed show.
Throughout the day, they learned about different weather systems, how they work, and why weather changes. It was a fun and educational experience that helped bring their classroom learning to life. 🌦️🔬😊
